A War America Cannot Win
Glenn Goodwin

Terrorism is despicable. It is cowardly and craven. It is murder and mayhem directed against innocent civilians, rather than legitimate warfare against combatants. A terrorist is not a brave soldier; rather he is an inhumane beast who deserves the scorn of all people everywhere. The United States of America has launched a campaign to root-out the evil of terrorism around the world. That is a worthy goal. That is what every God-fearing nation should do. So far, the war is going well. But the campaign is doomed to failure. America is the wrong tool to eradicate evil, has not properly identified the adversaries and cannot prevent the nuclear and bio-terrorism prophesied in the Bible. The Bible foretells a time of global peace; a false and temporary peace before the build-up to Armageddon. "And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled village; I will go up to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates." Ezekiel 38:11. This will only be a pseudo-peace. "For when they shall say, peace and safety: then sudden destruction cometh upon them." I Thessalonians 5:3.

The United States and its present international coalition cannot bring this global peace. This false peace will come about as the result of a diplomat, the white horse rider of Revelation 6:2, conquering by diplomacy and not force of arms. This is the role of the antichrist, also called the false prophet in the Scriptures. See Revelation 16:13. This peace-bringer is also called "the man of sin" and "the son of perdition" in II Thessalonians 2:2. This skilled diplomat will be a religious leader. He will do what the United States, the United Nations and Palestinian militants and Israelis military reprisals cannot do: he will bring calm to the Middle East. That will eliminate much of the underlying cause for terrorism. He will be viewed as a shepherd by Christians, Jews and Muslims. Zechariah 11:15-17. But he is a foolish, or worthless, shepherd who cannot bring true and lasting peace. The United States is not the false prophet; it is not the anti-Christ. It is not the tool that the Bible prophesies will be the instrument that ushers in this period of pseudo-peace. Therefore, the current war against terrorism will ultimately fail. President George W. Bush is a competent leader, and is making some sound decisions.

Yet he has not identified the proper enemy in this war. He proclaims that Islam is a peaceful religion that condemns terrorism. Since its introduction in the seventh century, Islam has been a bloody religion. It has always conquered by force. It teaches that infidels deserve death. This is not the misguided belief of a radical fringe group, but a core belief of the Islamic people. If Islam is a religion of peace, then let the Islamic people rise up against the terrorists, thrust them out, and bring peace. No, the radical extreme is tolerated, even respected and funded, by the so-called moderate elements. The false prophet Mohammed engaged in many military campaigns to spread his religion, and was merciless to his enemies. Once, he cut the heads off hundreds of Jewish men who did not side with him in battle. He said, "The sword is the key of heaven and hell; a drop of blood shed in the cause of Allah, a night spent in arms, is of more avail than two months of fasting or prayer: whosoever falls in battle, his sins are forgiven, and at the day of judgment his limbs shall be supplied by the wings of angels and cherubim." Islamic belief divides the world into two realms: Dar al-Islam, the wonderful area under Islamic domination; and, Dar al-Harb, the land of war – where a bloody struggle should eventually conquer for Islam. Surah 5:33 of the Koran reads, "The punishment of those who wage war against God and His messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or cutting of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land: that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter." Islam is not monolithic – it has splits and divisions. But it has been returning to its original militancy, worldwide, in the last few years.

President Bush may proclaim that this is not a war against Islam, but Islam believes it is in an armed struggle against America and the decadent West. The enemy in this war is a belief system that we have failed to properly identify. Therefore, the current war against terrorism will ultimately fail. The violent scourge of terrorism cannot be removed because the Bible contains prophecy of end-time terrorist acts. The third and fourth seals, foretold in Revelation 6:5-8, appear to describe bio-terrorism. These acts affect the world's food supply and bring sickness and death. The third seal in verse 4 describes some terrorist or rogue leader of a radical state who is given "a great sword." This may refer to nuclear weapons. The Battle of Armageddon is not the product of someone's imagination. It will happen. Many Scriptures speak of this great battle. See, e.g., Ezekiel 39:1-11, Joel 3:2, Zechariah 14:2, Revelation 16:16. Terrorism has been employed in the Israeli-Arab conflict ever since a homeland was given to the Jews in Palestine. Calls for "Jihad" and suicide-bombers will not be permanently silenced. Therefore, the current war against terrorism will ultimately fail. Because terrorism will continue to stalk the globe, God's people will be prepared, and prayerful. Ultimately, only God can protect His people. "An horse is a vain thing for safety." Psalms 33:17. Rather, "safety is of the Lord." Proverbs 21:31. The Lord has promised to protect His children; even from the evil of terrorism. "Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the Pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee."
